Traditional art studies - Lacquer painting (2nd year)

Lacquer Painting
This was the second painting in the traditional art studies subject. I had the chance to discover the phenomenal "urushi" or "son ta", the type of natural liquid that was used to mix with color pigments and applied on the wood panel called as "voc". Lacquer painting included in two actions that were "paint" and "grind". The action of painting was when I applied layers of urushi as well as silver leaves on top of them. On the other hand, grinding was when I started using sandpapers to rub onto the surface of "son ta" and revealed the layers underneath.
This step was applying the eggshells onto wood panels. After scanning the copy of the Dong Ho or Kim Hoang painting onto the panel, we mixed the liquid of son ta and color pigments to create a subtance to stick the shell to the ground.
Applying lines over the scan.

This step was fixing and refroming the shape of the drawing, by once again, applying the color layers and the silver leaves based on the original Kim Hoang painting.
I had continued adding color layers onto the silver surfaces before I grinded it one more time.
My classmates were polishing the paintings by adding cuttlebone powder onto the surface of the artwork and rubbed their palms around the painting.
